| F-1 / J-1 student or exchange | $185 (plus SEVIS fee) | Up to 5 years |

Fee waivers and reductions
- Fee waivers (Form I-912) are available only for certain forms and applicants, such as N-400 and I-90 for people with very low income, and many humanitarian filings.
- The N-400 reduced fee of $380 applies when household income is between 150% and 400% of the federal poverty guidelines.
- Small employers (25 or fewer full-time employees) and nonprofits pay reduced I-129 and Asylum Program Fees.
How to avoid a rejected filing
- Check the fee on the day you file, using the USCIS fee calculator.
- Use the current form edition; for example, a new Form I-485 edition has been required since September 18, 2026.
- Pay each form separately when filing a package by paper, so one wrong fee does not cause the whole package to be rejected.
- Keep proof of payment and the receipt notice for every filing.
